I do remember someone telling me to change my name to “Michelle” since Kenyans expect someone with my first name to have the language down. It’s like standing in the middle of a cultural gulf: to Kenyan’s it’s like my name is sacred history… to Americans, well- it’s a “unique” misspelling of an American name.
I’m no longer a teen (and really don’t count these issues as “problems” in my life so much as peculiarities that I find both interesting and fortunate to share among my 1st gen. Kenyan-American community), but man do a lot of these posts resonate!
