Rethinking… Conventional Thinking
“When you grow up, you tend to get told that the world ‘is the way it is’… life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact…” - Steve Jobs
“I think that we should try to examine the things that we’re using to make us happy.” - Russell Brand on the cult of celebrity
Kind of left-field here, but so wonderfully wise: “…Christianity spreads best not through force but through fascination.” -Shane Claiborne for Esquire. While I wouldn’t say that force is the conventional evangelical ‘technique’ or whatever of today (well… force is kind of a loaded term when it comes to faith and religion); but I would say some people rely too much on pressure, pre-fabricated lines and articles of persuasion that are out of touch with the moment (and perhaps message…) and insincere (sometimes unintentionally) to the audience. Conclusion?:Love can be enough.
“It is unimaginably hard to do this, to stay conscious and alive, day in and day out.”- David Foster Wallace on Life and Work; about our “default-settings” and freedom in this life. Kinda hard to find just one particular quote, but the second half about worship I found most touching and interesting.
Slow-reading (unfortunately unconventional in this 21st century): “The words of a writer… act as a catalyst in the mind of the reader, inspiring new insights, associations, and perceptions, sometimes even epiphanies.” - Patrick Kingsley for The Guardian UK
